The Chevy Suburban is a known element in the world of full-size SUVs. The Grand Wagoneer, however, is a new entry into the space. It is a luxury, three-row SUV and is part of Jeep’s new lineup that also includes the Wagoneer, a less luxurious version of the vehicle. The Suburban, for its part, got a makeover for its most recent release in the 2021 model year. This article is going to place these vehicles side-by-side so that we can compare and contrast them. Under the Hood: Massive Engines

A monstrous 6.4L V8 engine powers the Grand Wagoneer. This beast gets 471 horsepower and pairs with an automatic eight-speed transmission and four-wheel drive. The Grand Wagoneer’s powertrain is accompanied by independent rear suspension which helps the vehicle handle well.

Due to the strength of its engine and Jeep’s utility-oriented engineering the Grand Wagoneer enjoys a towing capacity of 9,860 pounds! If you want the whole family to pile into this three-row SUV for a long trip out of Boone you’ll have the space to fit all of them comfortably, and the strength to tow a trailer or camper along with you.

The Chevy Suburban enjoys a trio of engine options. Two are V8s, like the Grand Wagoneer; the Suburban also features a diesel engine option. The standard engine for most trims is a 5.3L V8 that makes 355 horsepower, with an upgraded 6.2L that enjoys 420 ponies also available. The diesel engine is a 3.0L V6 that outputs just 277 horsepower; it does, however, enjoy a high torque output.

Some of the features that are standard on the Grand Wagoneer, like adjustable air suspension, are optional on the Suburban. The Suburban also tops out at 7,800 pounds when it comes to towing.

Modern Vehicles, Modern Features

Both of these vehicles come with a variety of infotainment and safety features that Iowans might expect to see in new cars. The Suburban enjoys a 10-inch touchscreen in the center stack that allows one to control music and navigation. There is also an optional rear-seat entertainment system that helps if you’re bringing the kids along.

The Grand Wagoneer, however, has even more standard technology. Whether or not one opts for the digital gauge cluster, there are a pair of touchscreens in the front: a 12-inch one for managing connected devices, music, and the like, and a 10.3-inch screen for HVAC controls. There is also an optional screen for the passenger seat! The second row passengers enjoy a 10.3-inch screen in-between the captain’s chairs, and yet another pair of screens can be added to the backs of the front seats. The Grand Wagoneer is a truly modern luxury vehicle.

Grand Wagoneer vs Suburban: Conclusion

The Chevy Suburban is a well-known vehicle for good reason: it’s a strong vehicle that lets you cart around the whole family in style. That said, however, the Grand Wagoneer blows the Suburban out of the water. With a higher towing capacity, more connectivity, and a more powerful engine, it’s the better vehicle for camping trips, family reunions, or simple jaunts around town.
