For a lot of people shopping for a Jeep in Ames, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is the first vehicle they want to test drive. Brawny, elegant, and eminently capable, the Jeep Grand Cherokee is a long-time favorite for Iowa families. At Deery of Ames, we receive a lot of questions about the Grand Cherokee. One of the most common questions we get is about the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s towing capacity.

With several high-horsepower V8 options to choose from, there’s no doubt that the Grand Cherokee offers towing capability that is far beyond most direct competitors. The 2020, 2021, and 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokees all have a maximum towing capacity of 7,200 lbs, which rivals several popular pickup trucks. Combined with the its off-road capability and interior quality, the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s impressive towing numbers make it a great choice for Iowa families.

Grand Cherokee Engines – Refined Power & Performance

All 2020, 2021, and 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee models come with an engine powerful enough to easily handle passing and even off-roading. But for Boone drivers that want even more performance, there are three different V8 engines available on recent Jeep Grand Cherokee models – and a hybrid powertrain on the 2022 Grand Cherokee!

The base engine is a 3.6L V6 producing 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and is no slouch when it comes to towing. A V6-equipped Grand Cherokee can tow up to 6,200 lbs. The next step up is a 5.7L HEMI V8 that ups the Grand Cherokee’s power to 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque. For Iowa drivers looking to maximize the Grand Cherokee’s towing capacity, this is where you’ll want to start. The next engines in the Grand Cherokee lineup are a 6.4L SRT V8 that produces 475 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, and the supercharged 6.2L V8 that makes a whopping 707 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque. Not only can the supercharged Grand Cherokee tow up to 7,200 lbs, but it also goes from 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

While the Grand Cherokee can only tow its maximum capacity of 7,200 lbs when equipped with a V8, many Iowa Jeep owners will be satisfied with the 6,200 lb towing capacity of Jeep’s V6. The Jeep Grand Cherokee also uses an advanced eight-speed automatic, as well as cylinder shutoff technology to maximize the fuel efficiency of its engines. Combined, the Jeep Grand Cherokee’s powerful engines and advanced technologies provide inspiring performance and refined power delivery.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee adds a hybrid powertrain to the lineup. it does reduce towing capacity to 6,000 pounds, but it pairs this with great fuel efficiency. It even allows you to travel up to 25 miles on battery power alone, meaning that you can run errands in Marshalltown without using any gasoline!
