Over the last decade the three-row SUV has become an ever-more-popular way to drive around the whole family. As a response, the automakers who produce minivans have filled them with new utility features and worked to increase their fuel-efficiency. Two minivans that are popular in the American vehicle market despite the trend towards SUVs are the Chrysler Pacifica and the Toyota Sienna. This post is going to compare and contrast the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica and the 2022 Toyota Sienna to help families in Ames, IA figure out which one is the right fit for them and theirs.

What powers the Pacifica and Sienna?

The Pacifica is available with two different powertrains. One is a traditional configuration: it pairs a 3.6L V6 engine that makes 287 horsepower and 262 lb.-ft. of torque with a nine-speed automatic transmission. Boone drivers will appreciate the peppy acceleration of this version of the 2022 Chrysler Pacifica. The other available powertrain is a plug-in hybrid. This version of the minivan packs a V6 and a pair of motors that are powered by a 16-kWh battery. While the plug-in hybrid Pacifica only makes 260 horsepower, it does have significant fuel economy savings compared to the traditional version – it gets a whopping 84 miles to the gallon equivalent (a measure of hybrid vehicle performance by the EPA).

The 2022 Toyota Sienna has just one powertrain. It is a hybrid, but not a plug-in version. The Sienna has a 2.5L four-cylinder engine and a pair of electric motors that, when combined, output 243 horsepower. This is, of course, less than either version of the Pacifica. The Sienna also fails to make the most of new hybrid technology: the plug-in Pacifica can travel about 30 miles using just its battery, which allows Marshalltown drivers to run errands around town without using a drop of gasoline. The Sienna, by contrast, can only run in gasoline-and-battery mode.

Features and Interior

The 2022 Chrysler Pacifica can seat up to 8 people, although this option is only available on some trims (the other versions cap out at 7 occupants). Every single new Pacifica does, however, come with a one-year subscription to Sirius XM’s Guardian services which provides remote start, roadside service access, and live emergency assistance that you will hopefully not ever have to make use of. The minivan also features Chrysler’s Uconnect 5 software which Ames drivers can access via a 10.1″ touchscreen in the front of the car. Drivers with young children might want to opt for the rear-seat entertainment system that beams Amazon’s Fire TV into the backseat, which will help keep kids occupied during long drives.

The 2022 Toyota Sienna also offers 7- and 8-seat configurations, and it comes with Safety Connect, a live program similar to the Sirius XM package found on the Pacifica. The front seat touchscreen, however, is only 9″, which is harder to read than the Pacifica’s. The Toyota Sienna includes a raft of safety features such as automated emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and lane departure warning. These are not, however, exclusive to the Sienna: the Pacifica features the same technology, and will keep your family safe as you drive around Iowa.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica vs 2022 Toyota Sienna: Conclusion

While both the Pacifica and Sienna are strong entries in the minivan category, the Pacifica is the clear choice. It has more refined technology, for starters. The vehicle’s powertrain options are also both more compelling than those on the Toyota. The traditional engine makes more horsepower and provides better acceleration, while the plug-in hybrid option also makes more horsepower and can travel in electric-only mode! The Chrysler Pacifica hybrid is also eligible for a government tax credit worth up to 7,500 dollars.
