Interior and Design

When it comes to deciding between two SUVs with serious off-roading capabilities, one thing many consider is the history of the vehicle. The Jeep Wranglers are a direct descendant of the World War II Jeeps used by our troops to fight some of the greatest evil the world has ever known. On the other hand, the Bronco’s legacy, while it is an excellent vehicle, is troubled. Whether we’re talking about a white Bronco speeding down the highway on live TV or a classic Jeep supporting our troops, it’s undeniable these are both capable vehicles. Temporarily ignoring the storied past of these vehicles, we’ll take a detailed look at what they’re like today below.

Powertrain and Performance

It’s abundantly clear that if you’re looking for the most available options when it comes to the powertrain of your off-roading SUV, you’ll find that in the Jeep Wrangler. That’s due to the five available engines, ranging from gas-only to hybrid and plug-in hybrid. Drivers can choose exactly how much power, torque, and fuel economy they want out of their Jeep Wrangler engine. It is important to note, though, that only the gas V6 is available in standard transmission if that’s your preference – all others are only offered in automatic transmission. The fastest of the Wranglers is the Rubicon 392 model. With its 470 horsepower, 6.4L HEMI V8 gives the Wrangler serious power.

On the other hand, the Ford Bronco has less to choose from when it comes to powertrain options. With no hybrid options and less power at the high end (even when you opt for the obscenely pricy Bronco Raptor), the Bronco comes in lacking. The redeeming quality is that the Bronco is available in standard transmission on its slowest powertrain.

Fuel Economy

When looking at combined miles per gallon (highway and city), the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco stack up very similarly. The exception to this is the PHEV plug-in hybrid Jeep Wrangler, which makes an astounding 49MPGe combined. If you’re not looking for a plug-in hybrid vehicle, you’re going to have a difficult time choosing based on gas mileage.

Interior

Both the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco have surprisingly similar interiors; you won’t find more comfort in either one. Drivers can opt for a more stripped-down, adventure-ready cabin or choose something more opulent with leather seating and trim with heated seats. Also, with both vehicles, you’ll have more space if you choose four-door models over two-door models. Lastly, neither SUV has rear seats that fold flat for storage.

The main difference comes with the infotainment and navigation systems. Not only is the screen on the Jeep Wrangler slightly bigger (12.3” vs. 12”), but the navigation system with over 200 trail maps is included standard on the Jeep Wrangler; a navigation system is only optional on the Bronco.

Exterior

Both vehicles are built for off-roading and customizability; that much is clear. There are a lot of similarities, too. On many models, there is a removable roof – you don’t even need a soft top. Also, both vehicles have removable doors. Both vehicles have access to aux switches at some trims, which can be used for off-roading accessories and more.

Practical Capability: Towing and Off-Road Capability

What’s an SUV if you can’t use it to get what you need done? The most important practical considerations with these SUVs are described below.

Off-Road

When it comes to off-roading, there can only be one. While the Ford Bronco has various useful features like sway bar disconnect (which Wrangler also has) and G.O.A.T mode, nothing compares to a Jeep on the tail. This significant difference in off-roading capacity is largely due to the Bronco’s independent front suspension. Instead, the Jeep Wrangler’s suspension allows the wheels to rise up and down more in response to any rough terrain the trail can throw at you.

Towing

If you’re looking for a rig that can tow at least a couple of tons, both the Jeep Wrangler and the Ford Bronco will do the job for you. While the Ford Bronco can technically tow more on the top end than the Jeep Wrangler, for most simple jobs, the Jeep Wrangler will do the trick.

2024 Jeep Wrangler vs. 2024 Ford Bronco: Overall Winner

Though Edmunds ranks them similarly, even if you opt for the tempting upgrades, the 2024 Ford Bronco just doesn’t stack up against the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. When you put both SUVs head-to-head, it’s anything but a tie; the 2024 Jeep Wrangler takes the competition.
