2024 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer
Dropping the V8

The Former Powertrains

Neither of the formerly offered HEMI V8s are available on the Jeep Wagoneer or the Grand Wagoneer. However, just like previous model years regarding four-wheel drive, both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer are offered in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It is bittersweet, but Jeep has dropped the 6.4L and 5.7L HEMI V8 engines altogether for the 2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer.

The Hurricane: A Modern Classic

2024 Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer | Deery Brothers of Ames, Inc. in Ames IA

Like the original Jeep Wagoneer of the 1960s, all Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers use an inline-six engine. This time, instead of a tornado inline six like in the 1960s, Wagoneers and Grand Wagoneers rock an engine more quarrelsome in nature, the hurricane engine. If you had to foster a guess based on the sheer devastating power of tornados vs hurricanes which engine you’d rather have, you’d be right. (It’s the hurricane).

The twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder engine, the Hurricane, is what you’ll find exclusively on the 2024 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer. This engine, however, has been in the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer lineup for a few years. The once-new Hurricane Inline Six is now standard. Some may balk at being able to purchase an inline six only instead of a thirsty V8, but its power and classic signaling are difficult to argue with; It has a massive towing capacity of 10,000 pounds and a beefy maximum horsepower of 510hp. This maximum strength can be found on the high output twin turbo 3.0 liter inline six, standard in the Grand Wagoneer and available in the Wagoneer.

Two Engines: Same Name

There are actually two different versions of the hurricane engine. The regular version is offered standard on Wagoneer models, while the high output version is standard on the Grand Wagoneer. These engines offer the same towing capacity but have slightly different horsepowers at 420 and 510, respectively.

Long Wheelbase
The Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L

The 2024 Jeep Wagoneer is available as a regular Wagoneer or a Wagoneer L. The L denotes a long wheelbase and is available as the Grand Wagoneer L, which is the same size. With this, you get a significantly longer SUV than the short-wheelbase version.

To give you an idea, both the Wagoneer L and the Grand Wagoneer L are 226.7” long. That’s an entire foot longer than the short wheelbase version, which rings in at 214.7”.

The long-wheelbase Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L are both longer than their competitors in the Tahoe and Suburban. This means a more perfect balance of cargo space and legroom in the third row in the long wheelbase Wagoneer L than anything else in class.

Interior
2024 Jeep Wagoneer vs Grand Wagoneer

Both Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer drivers enjoy a spacious three rows of seating. However, there are some differences in what’s available depending on whether you’re in a Wagoneer or Grand Wagoneer. Also, in both the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer is the available head-up display, which can help you keep your eyes on the road while driving.

More specifically, in the Wagoneer, you’ll find leather trim throughout the cabin. In the front, there’s a 10.1” infotainment screen with the option to add a matching one for the passenger. Wagoneer drivers can also opt for a premium 19-speaker McIntosh stereo system. A tri-pane panoramic sunroof replaces the roof of the Wagoneer at certain trim levels. Essentially, the difference between the Wagoneer and the Grand Wagoneer is a premium SUV vs an opulent luxury SUV. This means you’re getting premium quality either way, but you’ll see what more this means when we dive into the interior of the Grand Wagoneer.

2024 Grand Wagoneer

The Grand Wagoneer, even at its base model, is opulence at its core. Drivers can choose from a Walnut or Aluminum trim in the front. This pairs well with the slew of available high-tech options to make the drive safer, like customizable ambient interior lighting, a rear-seat video monitoring system, and a digital rearview mirror. Moreover, the second-row captain’s chairs are standard in the Grand Wagoneer.

The array of infotainment screens on the Grand Wagoneer deserves a section of its own. The driver gets a 12.0” infotainment screen, while the passenger gets a 10.3” screen to themselves. The real estate of these screens is not taken by other features, either, as the HVAC system is operated by an entirely different touchscreen. What’s more, dual 10.1” rear touchscreens can be opted for in the back if the standard single 10.3” rear screen isn’t enough. A magnificent 23-speaker McIntosh speaker system is available to pair with these. Everyone can be entertained with the Grand Wagoneer.
